artist ~ jodie gear
I took a little road trip down the Mornington Peninsula and got to spend a beautiful morning with the incredibly talented Jodie Gear. After giving up a successful career with Lululemon to pursue her dreams, Jodie is now a full-time artist working out of her stunning home studio, which she lovingly calls her “Shedio.”
I was excited to visit Jodie's beautiful 'Shedio' and learn more about her stunning artworks and creative process. Walking into Jodie’s space felt like stepping into a calm oasis where soft, soothing colors filled the space. Her studio is not just a space for creating, it’s her sanctuary, her happy place, where she can let her creativity flow and escape from everyday distractions.
"My heart is my studio - also known as the “Shedio”. This is my personal creative space where I get my flow on." ~ Jodie
Jodies artwork embodies a gentleness that makes you want to slow down, breathe deeply, and take it all in. And Jodie herself is just as lovely as her art. We chatted like old friends, talked about life, our younger years and our plans for the future. We also discussed the rollercoaster ride that is owning and running your own business. From the ups and the downs, and the beautiful in between.
Jodie’s story is one of passion and artistic joy—and I’m thrilled to be able to share a little snippet of it with you.
Where do you draw your inspiration from?
Definitely the Ocean and our natural environment. How lucky are we! We've got the bay beach, the back beach, the surf. I find being connected to the land really important and just Mother Nature, the sky formations ... I see it everywhere. If you're looking for it, its all around.
Whats the best thing about running your own business?
Definitely the freedom and flexibility to have my own schedule, to decide when I want to do things and creating it all for myself. I'm definitely a person that puts other people first but in this environment I really get to be completely in my own flow and I love that!
Whats the hardest thing about running your own business?
Being Alone! I spend a lot of time on my own, which I feel really comfortable doing but coming from a corporate career and a big team and having people around you, I think that is probably, from a physical, and not being around other people is one of the hardest things. But its now about creating my own community and meeting like minded people where we're all on the same kind of journey and we can all support each other.
If you weren't an Artist, what would you be doing?
I've dreamed of doing this for so long so it's hard to think that I would be doing anything else. Maybe a florist! I love flowers and my garden. My garden is my other creative outlet.
Do you have any advice for anyone starting out?
Yeah, Do it! I think life is way too short not to and whats the worst that can happen. I would much rather be going down this path and exploring all the things that I had in my heart and my mind and see where I could go with it instead of always wondering. So I think do it and do it little steps at a time, you don't have to give up a career if theres a financial aspect to it but just take baby steps. But Do It... and don't look back.
